Sleuthing public records

The Student Press Law Center points out The Lansing State Journal’s stories on who is buying those luxury boxes for Michigan State football games.

There’s a lot of good work there.

There’s also this timeline the Journal did that demonstrates how they came by all this useful information. That’s an inspired read.

Work like that takes longterm planning, patience, a critical eye, more patience and probably a little more patience. Sometimes it takes a little gumption. You might have to go toe-to-toe with people who’d really rather not share any more than they think they have to.

But stick with your story. When you’re on the trail of something interesting the people you’re dealing with may put up laborious, tedious and costly roadblocks. Why do you think that is?
