The NY Times sneak peek

Via the invaluable Nieman Lab comes the glance behind the curtain at what the developers are doing with their redesign of the New York Times. This new look starts “with the article experience“:

Easy Access to Sections

Arts, Politics, Fashion, Business, Sports, Technology, Opinion, Travel — always a click away. You can also make a list of shortcuts to your favorite sections.

“That seems obvious,” says the snarky observer.

But look at the layout they are showing you in this prototype. That’s as indicative of mobile as a traditional news site has thus far been. They may be conceptually starting with the article, but they are designing for your phones and tablets.

As the Times goes on this design, so will many folks follow.

(Updated to correct a headline typo.)
